Why is this theme important to small towns?

Small towns tend to have a more limited selection of transport choices compared with larger towns or cities. Despite the rise in car use, some towns still have between 10 and 30% of their population without car access. This affects the ability of people to move around within a town or wider region. It impacts upon the ability of people to access places, services or employment. As transport and infrastructure are often expensive investments, it is important that practitioners use planning initiatives that appropriately suit their community’s needs (see ‘Long Term Planning’ component).
