What are the consequences of small towns ignoring the theme?

With so many groups working together, a significant amount of negotiation and compromise must take place. Partnerships that are unsuccessful or exclusive (see ‘Equal Opportunity and Inclusion’ component) can have serious consequences in small towns by:

  • Reducing the feelings of inclusion within the community and reinforcing discrimination or bias;
  • Seeming to deliver decisions without appropriate consultation, establishing a level of mistrust towards to local government; or
  • Creating economic leaks by blocking local residents from participating in and benefiting from new development.
  • Delivering inappropriate developments that either do not address or undermine the needs of local residents.

Ultimately these consequences affect the success of new developments (see ‘Housing’, ‘Community Safety and Facilities’ and ‘Transport and Infrastructure’ components). Without local support, valuable time and money is lost with no positive change to show for it (see ‘Community Dialogue and Engagement’ component).
