Why is this theme important to small towns?

Small towns have different kinds of social networks than those found in larger urban areas. Generally, social ties play a much more significant part of the overall social network in small towns and their rural areas. Being part of the local social network lends a sense of responsibility in people to invest in their local area (see ‘Community Dialogue & Engagement’ component). In addition to this, a region-wide network can be a valuable asset to small town economies, by giving them more competitive leverage against larger urban centres (see ‘Jobs and Employment’ and ‘Tourism’ components).
