Why is this theme important to small towns?

Small town residents have generally cleaner air to breathe and more natural areas to explore than people living in bigger cities. For this reason, it is often assumed that small towns and rural areas are healthier places to live (see ‘Identity and Culture’ and ‘Marketing and Promotion’ components). However, there are a growing number of barriers to healthy living in rural areas. These need to be appropriately addressed by local practitioners, especially as new development takes place (see ‘Environmental Quality’ and ‘Housing’ components). A healthy community is more confident, able to cope with change, and more likely to take interest and pride in the town’s affairs (see ‘Community Dialogue’ component).
