What are the consequences of small towns ignoring the theme?

How we interact with one another plays an important role in the shaping of the sense of place within the town or city. The loss of a sense of safety within the community can lead to:

  • Reduced activity levels in the town centre leading to economic decline and loss of investment (see ‘Town Centre Management’ component);
  • A sense of isolation among residents often combined with a general lack of faith in the local government; or
  • Further increases in crime levels and social decline.
  • Negative image

The loss of community facilities in a small town can lead to:

  • Increased dependence on the private car for transport to services
  • Reduced levels of independence, particularly for vulnerable members of the community
  • Reduced sense of community identity leading to social decline.
  • Lack of opportunities for education, lifelong learning and personal development.
