What are the consequences of small towns ignoring the theme? |
How we interact with one another plays an important role in the shaping of the sense of place within the town or city. The loss of a sense of safety within the community can lead to:
- Reduced activity levels in the town centre leading to economic decline and loss of investment (see ‘Town Centre Management’ component);
- A sense of isolation among residents often combined with a general lack of faith in the local government; or
- Further increases in crime levels and social decline.
- Negative image
The loss of community facilities in a small town can lead to:
- Increased dependence on the private car for transport to services
- Reduced levels of independence, particularly for vulnerable members of the community
- Reduced sense of community identity leading to social decline.
- Lack of opportunities for education, lifelong learning and personal development.
